You have to be free when you write

I think you have to be free when you write. If you think of a reader, you are not free. To do something good you have to step out of society, almost out of humanity, if that’s possible. That doesn’t mean that you don’t respect the reader, but that comes later. I don’t think Joyce considered what anyone would think when he wrote Finnegans Wake, because that’s an unreadable book.

Why You should read Karl Ove Knausgaard

I would recommend My Struggle to all my friends. Of course people will read and respond to the books in different ways and will focus on different aspects of them, but I believe Knausgaard is working with universal questions…what it means to be a human being, the elasticity of time, the unspeakable, the sublime, memory, what it feels like to be a child or a parent, to suffer, how desires and fears shape and consume us.
